Are you interested in volunteering at St. Patrick’s Cathedral?
The person who surrenders himself to the God he loves above all else thereby consecrates himself more intimately to God's service and to the good of the Church. Catechism of the Catholic Church no. 931
There are a number of ways in which you can volunteer in the Parish of St Patrick’s Cathedral Melbourne:
- Lectors – Lectors prepare each week and weekend to read Sacred Scriptures at Mass. Prior experience is helpful and reading Rosters are prepared trimonthly.
- Ushers- The role of an usher at St Patrick’s Cathedral is to greet and welcome parishioners & visitors to each of the Sunday Liturgies in the Cathedral. They may assist with distribution of newsletters and hymnals and assist with any basic enquiries.
- Collectors- Collectors who attend the weekend Masses assist with both collections. As the Liturgy of the Eucharist begins collectors are requested to come forward to pass the collection bags for the monetary gifts of offering. The First is for the support of the priests who serve the Cathedral Parish, priests in parishes whose parish cannot support them financially, the Archbishop and retired priests. The Second is taken up after the distribution of Holy Communion and helps to meet the repairs & maintenance costs, administrative costs, loans, use of public utilities, rates, insurance and usual outgoings of any household.
- All Volunteers are usually rostered and are expected to commit themselves to the roster. If for any reason you cannot fulfil your commitment you are requested to find someone on the roster, to take your place.
- Friends of the Cathedral
The aim of Friends of St. Patrick’s Cathedral exists to assist, in association with and under the direction of the Dean of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, in promoting the interests of the Cathedral.
Specifically the Friends undertake:
- To assist in welcoming visitors and in developing their appreciation of the Cathedral as a place of worship and its eminence and role in the City of Melbourne.
- To assist in ways suggested by the Dean with the maintenance and improvement of the fabric of the building and its furnishings.
- To be available to assist the Dean and the clergy of the Cathedral in other ways from time to time.
